Information we collect

The personal information we collect will depend on your relationship with us and may include:

  • your name;

We may use personal information to:

  • respond to enquiries;

We do not currently use personal information for routine mass email marketing or newsletters.

If this changes, we will ensure that any marketing activity complies with applicable data-protection and electronic-communications legislation.

Our lawful bases for using personal information

Depending on the circumstances, we process personal information under one or more of the following lawful bases:

Contract – where processing is necessary to provide services you have requested or to take steps at your request before entering into a contract.

Legal obligation – where we need to retain or use information to comply with legal, tax, accounting or regulatory requirements.

Legitimate interests – where processing is reasonably necessary to operate and protect our business, provide and improve our services, communicate with clients and maintain appropriate business records, provided that these interests are not overridden by your rights and interests.

Where another lawful basis is required for a particular activity, we will use the appropriate basis.

Payments

Youcan Consulting Ltd does not store customers' debit or credit card details.

We use third-party payment providers, including GoCardless for Direct Debit arrangements and PayPal for certain payments.

When you use these services, your payment information is processed by the relevant payment provider in accordance with its own privacy and security arrangements.

We may retain information about payments made, such as the amount, date, invoice reference and payment status, as part of our accounting records.

Service providers

We use carefully selected third-party service providers to operate our business and provide services to our clients.

These currently include:

  • 20i, IONOS and Hostinger – website hosting and associated infrastructure;

  • Microsoft 365 – business email, electronic communications and cloud storage;

  • QuickBooks – accounting and financial record keeping;

  • GoCardless – Direct Debit payment processing; and

  • PayPal – payment processing.

These providers may process personal information on our behalf or, depending on the service concerned, act as independent data controllers.

We do not sell personal information.

We only disclose or provide access to personal information where reasonably necessary to provide our services, operate our business, comply with a legal obligation, protect our legitimate interests, or where you have authorised us to do so.

Website hosting and client data

As part of our website hosting, development, maintenance and support services, Youcan Consulting Ltd may have technical access to information stored on websites belonging to our clients.

In these circumstances, the client will generally determine why and how personal information relating to their own website users, customers or service users is collected and used.

Where Youcan Consulting Ltd processes such information solely on the client's instructions, we act as a data processor on behalf of that client rather than as the data controller.

Our hosting and technology providers may also act as sub-processors where their infrastructure is used to provide those services.

Separate contractual arrangements may apply to processing carried out by us on behalf of clients.

Access to information and security

Personal information held directly by Youcan Consulting Ltd is stored electronically.

Access is restricted to authorised persons who require the information for legitimate business purposes.

We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against unauthorised access, accidental loss, alteration, disclosure or destruction.

International processing

Some of the technology and service providers we use may process or store information outside the United Kingdom.

Where personal information is transferred internationally, we take reasonable steps to ensure that appropriate protections are in place in accordance with applicable UK data-protection law.

Further information about relevant safeguards can be requested by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

How long we keep information

We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, including providing our services and satisfying legal, accounting, regulatory and contractual requirements.

Different types of information may therefore be retained for different periods.

Financial and accounting information is retained for the period required by applicable law.

Client information and correspondence may be retained while services are being provided and for an appropriate period afterwards where it is reasonably necessary for support, business records, legal obligations or the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.

Information that is no longer required will be securely deleted or anonymised where appropriate.

  • the right to request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information;

  • the right to request deletion of your information in certain circumstances;

  • the right to request restriction of processing in certain circumstances;

  • the right to object to certain processing;

  • the right to data portability in certain circumstances; and

  • rights relating to automated decision-making where applicable.

Not all rights apply in every circumstance.

If you wish to exercise any of your data-protection rights, please contact Youcan Consulting Ltd in the first instance by email at:

We may need to verify your identity before responding to a request.

You also have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests in circumstances provided for by data-protection law.

I can highly recommend Mark Bate and his company YouCan Consulting if you are a therapist who wants a bespoke website as well as marketing advice. I found Mark incredibly helpful, attentive and patient as he guided me through the process of designing a website for my private practice. I ended up with all that I had hoped for, and more. Mark understands the challenges of psychological practice and the tension that professionals face in marketing their services while retaining an ethical stance. His warm and friendly nature made him a pleasure to deal with at all times.
Angela Gilchrist
Consultant Clinical Psychologist
"Thanks Mark for an excellent job. My website looks great! People have given me really good feedback saying it works well, looks good and is easy to navigate. You gave so generously of your time, and your expertise means I have been able to achieve more than I had originally hoped for."
Dr Alesia Moulton-Perkins
Chartered Psychologist
"Mark has been absolutely wonderful to work with. Patient, professional, approachable and he is very good at what he does. There were a few technical issues during the implementation process that would have left this technophobe's head spinning, but Mark was helpful and easily and simply explained the difficult. I love my new website. It is exactly what I had hoped for and wanted. I credit Mark's excellent work and creativity in being instrumental in helping me build my business through my internet presence. I highly recommend YouCan Consulting."
Elaina Curran
Hypnotherapist
Mark and the YouCan consulting team have been absolutely fantastic in helping developing our new therapy website, and at very reasonable costs. Mark's expertise in designing the site and his informed advice regarding its content has been invaluable. He has been incredibly patient throughout the process, despite multiple requests and re-edits, and he has worked hard to meet each and every one of our needs and preferences. I cannot recommend his services highly enough.
Dr Gabriel Brady
Better Therapy Partnership
"Mark has worked closely with me to really understand, clarify & create the branding, content and overall 'feel' for the various elements of my developing practice and has always proved to be insightful, efficient and very much focused on my needs. His ability to translate what is in one's mind into something tangible and effective is evident as is his balance of warmth & credibility. I look forward to working with him for many years to come and would certainly strongly recommend him as an important resource for anyone looking to move into, refresh or build a private practice."
